Veolia Develops Mine Closure Solutions to Address Environmental Risks and Repurpose Old Mines

STRATEGIC MINERALSWATER INFRASTRUCTURE & DESALINATIONNATURAL GASBIOPOWERBIOFUELS

Veolia has developed comprehensive mine closure solutions to manage environmental risks associated with abandoned mines, particularly acid mine drainage (AMD). The company has implemented practices that include infrastructure dismantling, soil and water remediation, and ongoing monitoring.

At the Wheal Jane mine in Cornwall, Veolia manages a wastewater treatment facility that processes over 6000 m³ of polluted water daily. In Australia, the Woodlawn Eco-precinct repurposes a former copper, lead, and zinc mine into a bioreactor landfill, capturing methane for bioenergy.

Veolia also partners with the Lausitzer und Mitteldeutsche Bergbau-Verwaltungsgesellschaft to rehabilitate mining land in Germany, converting it into sustainable ecosystems. As demands for transition metals increase, effective closure programs will be essential.
