Viking Line Reports Cargo Record and Advances Towards Fossil-Free Maritime Transport in 2025
Viking Line reported a record transportation of 139,484 cargo units in 2025, alongside 4.6 million passengers, despite a slight overall decline in passenger numbers. The company significantly increased its biogas usage, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by over 60,000 tonnes, and introduced a carbon-neutral option for customers. Additionally, Viking Line announced the Helios concept for an electric-powered ferry, aiming to establish a green shipping corridor by the early 2030s as part of its commitment to fossil-free maritime transport.

In 2025, Viking Line recorded 4.6 million passengers across its five vessels and transported a record 139,484 cargo units, marking nearly a 4% increase from 2024. Passenger numbers slightly declined by 0.8%, but the company saw a 12% increase on the Helsinki-Stockholm route, boosting its market share to 47%.
Viking Line also increased its biogas use tenfold to approximately 6,000 tonnes, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by over 60,000 tonnes. The company introduced a carbon-neutral option for both passengers and cargo customers.
In June, Viking Line unveiled the Helios concept for an electric-powered ferry intended for the Helsinki-Tallinn route, potentially establishing a green shipping corridor by the early 2030s. This initiative reflects Viking Line's commitment to reducing reliance on fossil fuels and enhancing sustainable maritime transport.
