WBA Launches ADCS International to Combat Methane Leakage in Biogas Sector
Methane leakage is costing biogas operators significant revenue while endangering environmental integrity. The World Biogas Association's new ADCS International certification scheme aims to establish global standards for leak-free operations, emphasizing both economic and ecological imperatives.

The World Biogas Association (WBA) has introduced the Anaerobic Digestion Certification Scheme International (ADCS Intl) to address methane leakage, which is reported to cost operators up to hundreds of thousands in lost revenue. The scheme includes multiple certification levels, with criteria focused on safe operations, high gas quality, and environmental compliance.
New modules on air emissions monitoring will be added in the upcoming update to enhance the operational performance of biogas plants. The IEA's 2025 Outlook highlighted methane leakage rates of 0.1-12%, influenced by the age and size of AD plants, underscoring the necessity for improved practices. Failure to manage methane emissions could jeopardize the financial viability and reputation of the biogas sector.
