Wonthaggi Desalination Plant Activation to Secure Water Supplies for Melbourne and Gippsland
The Victorian Government has ordered 150 billion liters from the Wonthaggi Desalination Plant due to declining water levels in Melbourne, now at 78.6% capacity. This move will also benefit water users in Bass Coast and South Gippsland, supporting local reservoirs facing low levels.

The Victorian Government has announced an order for 150 billion liters from the Wonthaggi Desalination Plant, activated due to record low metropolitan water storage levels, currently at 78.6% capacity. The desalination plant, capable of supplying one-third of Melbourne's annual demand, has delivered over 500 billion liters since its inception, preventing potential water restrictions.
Water levels in the Candowie Reservoir are at 55% capacity, and Lance Creek Reservoir is at 72%, both of which may receive additional desalinated water. To address immediate local supply challenges, a temporary pipeline is under construction to transfer water to Leongatha's Ruby Creek reservoir, currently at 54% capacity. Long-term water security solutions are in planning stages to sustain regional supplies.
