York Region to Launch Innovative Biofuel Plant for Green Bin Waste Conversion

BIOFUELS

In a significant stride toward sustainable waste management, Convertus Group has announced the impending construction of a state-of-the-art biofuel facility in York Region, poised to transform curbside green bin waste into valuable resources. With all necessary permits secured, the facility will rise north of Newmarket, adjacent to the region's materials recovery plant in East Gwillimbury, and is expected to commence operations in 2027.

This ambitious project is designed to process up to 200,000 tonnes of organic waste annually, meeting the region's needs through 2047. In its initial year, the plant is projected to generate sufficient renewable natural gas to heat approximately 5,000 homes, alongside producing 165,000 tonnes of fertilizer to enhance local agricultural lands.

Arun Gudla, Vice President of Strategic Initiatives at Convertus, emphasized the team's ongoing progress, noting the completion of underground services and the commencement of work on the waste receiving pit and the construction of large anaerobic digestion tanks. As the project advances towards 2026, attention will shift to the installation of processing equipment and staff recruitment, ensuring a smooth transition into the operational phase.

Regional leaders, including former chairperson Wayne Emmerson, have hailed this initiative as a model for sustainable practices, highlighting its potential to secure a long-term, cost-effective solution for managing green bin materials. The project is expected to divert organic waste from landfills, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 115,000 tonnes annually—including those saved by eliminating the need for waste transport.

York Region's 20-year partnership with Convertus, formalized in January 2023, is projected to yield savings of $85 million while advancing innovative waste management practices that support the community's growth and environmental goals. This venture not only underscores the importance of sustainable solutions but also sets a precedent for other communities striving to embrace greener futures.
