Zambia Enhances Alternative Energy Initiatives to Reduce Fuel Imports
Zambia's Energy Regulation Board (ERB) is advancing alternative energy strategies to limit fuel imports through electric vehicles and biofuels. Key measures include developing electric vehicle infrastructure and regulatory frameworks for biofuel production.

Zambia is implementing strategies to decrease its dependence on imported fuel by promoting electric vehicles and biofuels. The ERB is establishing a framework for electric vehicle charging and pricing, anticipating reduced petrol and diesel usage in transport.
Licensing and technical standards for biofuels are also being introduced, allowing oil companies to blend up to 20% ethanol with petrol. These changes aim to mitigate the impact of rising fuel prices, enhancing energy security and price stability.
Recent suspension of excise duty and zero-rated VAT on fuels from April to June 2026 is expected to ease inflation pressures, particularly benefiting sectors like transport and agriculture. However, challenges such as higher production costs for ethanol remain.
