Gloucester Crematorium to Undergo £5m Renewable Energy Upgrade
Gloucester City Council is investing £5 million to transition Coney Hill Crematorium to renewable energy, focusing on green gas and electricity. This initiative aims to enhance energy efficiency and support decarbonization efforts.

Coney Hill Crematorium in Gloucester will receive a £5 million upgrade to enhance energy efficiency, aiming to use agricultural biomethane and 100% renewable electricity. The investment includes replacing cremators and infrastructure maintenance, with £3.8 million allocated for 2026-27 and £1.2 million for 2027-28 from the capital budget.
This initiative aligns with the council's decarbonization goals and is expected to represent an estimated expenditure of £2.23 million over three years starting April 1, under a new agreement with West Mercia Energy. The upgrade is seen as a rare opportunity to improve facilities for families during difficult times.
